Rays of Truth - Crystals of Light: Information and Guidance for the Golden Age
Published in Paperback by Pyradyne Incorporated (01 March, 1998)
Authors: Fred Bell and Jonathan Spinney
Average review score:

Eye opener!
This book has a way of making the reader consider all the possibilities that exist of seen and unseen influences, both positive and negative.

The "truth is out there" is really brought home in various chapters in this book. If what Dr Fred Bell writes is true, and I personally feel that what he reports has credence, then humanity can benefit. I am fascinated by all the explanantions from ET cover-ups to proper nutrition. Nutrition not only of what we ingest, but of "spiritual" nutrition from a cosmic point of view, free of religious dogma.

This book is a must read, I really enjoyed it.

Truly Amazing From ALL Points Of View
This book is no nonsense, and when I was done, I really had a much clearer understanding of not only what was going on in the world, but in the universe, and myself. It elegantly blends hard core Physics , Mathamatics, in a creative and truly freesh look, at the inner workings of life, and offers down to earth solutions to today's crazy problems. I thought the book was Amazing, and it should be read by everyone.. I can say truly that this is one of those best books to keep.. :)

Reading in the Dark: Using Film As a Tool in the English Classroom
Published in Paperback by National Council of Teachers of English (September, 2001)
Author: John Golden
Average review score:

Golden and Film
Many people perceive television as the enemy of reading and writing. In his book, John Golden defies what other teachers deem the traditional methods of teaching by bringing films into the classroom. Elizabeth and Apocalypse Now are just some examples of how to inspire students to look for imagery and symbolism in film and then to apply it to literature.

This book is very instructive and extremely interesting. It is definitely the best I've read. Teachers of all grade levels should read this book to, perhaps, interest their students in the literary arts. It's great for the move into the age of technology.

The Best Film Book for Teachers...EVER!!
As a teacher, I get BOMBARDED with teaching guides, materials, books, etc. You name it, I've got one.

That said, this is simply the single best resource I have ever encountered for using film in the classroom.
Golden's point is simple and clear: It's not enough to just say "Movie Day!" and pop a tape into the VCR. We must teach our students to read film in the same way that we teach them to analyze and encounter any other kind of text.

Golden's book contains wonderful exercises, ideas, very specific clips from dozens of films, and teaching materials (age appropriate films, sample questions and assessments) for several grade levels.

As a professional collegue of the author, I have been fortunate indeed to have been using his materials for over 5 years now. My students consistently rave about the unit in their year-end reflections. They say things like, "I never knew there was so much going on in the film before." and "You've changed the way that I look at films forever!"

On behalf of all English/LA teachers: Thanks, John!!

Richard Scarry's Polite Elephant (The Little Golden Treasures Series)
Published in Hardcover by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (September, 1998)
Author: Richard Scarry
Average review score:

A big hit in our household !
Our 18-month-old can not hear this being read enough. We must read it 5 times a day or more, maybe much more, with him asking/signing 'more' again. The illustrations, as can be expected, are excellent. Best of all, from a parents point of view, is that it teaches the importance of manners.

Given the lack of manners that I often see on playgrounds (by parents!) I think that it is imperative that good manners be drilled (there is the 'd' word) into children when quite young. Good social graces are usually a surer factor of success in life than extra points on an IQ test. There is a plethora of books out about raising bright kids, but markedly fewer about raising polite kids.

I picked this title up in a supermarket on a whim, and found it a favorite with our little guy, who already likes to say "please and "thank you" as well as "How do you do?". Buy it.

cute and fun to read, and also teaches good manners
Cute Richard Scarry pictures are always fun for children, and this book combines the fun of Scarry's cartoon animals and vehicles with many tips on good manners in several different situations. Needed by many of today's children.

Riches Untold is the first book in the Chronicles of the Golden Frontier series with new author J.Landon Ferguson. This Christian novel contains wonderful historical facts and events about one of the most colorful events in American History (the gold and silver boomtown days). The characters are great and very believable. I can't wait for book #2.

Science Is Golden
Published in Paperback by Michigan State Univ Pr (30 July, 2001)
Author: Ann Finkelstein
Average review score:

Children's Science
This is a kid- and parent-friendly book that will make elementary science more fun for everyone.
Science is Golden is a fun introduction to scientific thinking and problem solving. If you like children, science, logic, problem-solving, sledding, throwing rocks or the TV remote, this book is for you! Science is Golden will also help you design a killer science project with your kids.
This book describes the philosophy of science applied to children's science experiments. Scientists have a formal approach to problem-solving though the scientific method. Science is Golden describes how to implement this powerful mode of thinking to solve experimental problems that arise from children's questions about science. In many ways, teaching children science through the scientific method is an easier and more powerful approach than teaching many disembodied scientific factoids--the current, unfortunate school model.

Excellent learning experience for kids AND adults!
What is your answer when your kids keep asking you "Why" this and "Why" that? Curiosity is a great gift we have (especially kids!), and this book is a wonderful guide in how to feed that curiosity. The "problem-solving approach to science" this author describes and uses to answer kid's questions, from how many germs can be found on coins to how a remote control works, is not only a joy to read about, but also teaches kids AND parents how to investigate any question in a systematic and creative way. I highly recommend this book to all parents regardless of their background in science -- there is something in here to learn whether you are a kid, a college student (like myself), a Ph.D.-level research scientist, or several years removed from your last science course. Keep the "Why"s coming and learn with your kids!

The Scribe's Family: A Golden Age Saga Spanning Five Millennia
Published in Hardcover by Hypatia Press (01 July, 1997)
Author: Don Jacobson
Average review score:

INCREDIBLE!!!
I admit that when I first heard about this book, and the way it's played out, I was skeptical. I figured it would be too complex and too boring to bother with. But, being the fan of Historical Fiction that I am, I read it anyway. I'm currently reading it a 3rd time. I LOVE IT!

Fascinating historical tour with a unique story approach
A thoroughly entertaining and enlightening perspective on the evolution of our social and personal environment --- famliy, government, sex, religion... Much in the vein of Michener, but with a unique storytelling approach. The book follows the history a family (that is, the same INDIVIDUALS) as they are placed episodically in ten "golden ages". It's chocked full of interesting insights into the times of each age, while at the same time developing a set of consistent personalized characters that the reader can embrace. Looking forward to the next of the series

The Secret of Secrets (Golden Palm Series)
Published in Paperback by Islamic Texts Society (January, 1992)
Authors: Tosun Bayrak, Hadrat'Abd A. Al-Jilani, Hadrat Abdul-Qadir Al-Jilani, Abd Al-Qadir Al-Jilani Hadratt, 'Abd, Sheikh Tosun Bayrak, and Shaykh Tosun Bayrak
Average review score:

Awe-inspiring. Enlightening & wonderful book full of Truths.
This is one of those rare books which, no matter how many superlatives one uses, one cannot fathom its reality. The language is wonderfully lucid, clear and yet still poetic and enchanting. Indeed, Shaykh Abd al Qadir al Jilani, who by concensus is regarded as THE greatest Saint in Islam amongst the latter generations (i.e. exluding the Prophet's generation and the two generations after him), and whose honorific title is "Al-Ghawth al 'Azam" (The Greatest Helper) to reflect his unparalleled rank in the spiritual heirarchy of Saints, is THE Perfect Guide to all those on the Sufi path or those interested in the mystical way. This book is unique in that anyone at any level can read it and he or she will no doubt benefit but in reality it is a book which contains in it the secrets of Existence itself except that one has to be on a high spiritual station oneself to truly understand the great wisdoms and oceans of spiritual knowledge contained herein. Each chapter is short and succint yet contains an ocean of hidden meanings. Each person takes from it according to his level. Though I cannot say how accurate this intepretation is to the original as I dont know Arabic, I can voachsafe that for all English speaking Muslims (and non-Muslims interested in Islamic mysticism or in the Way to God) this book is a must-have and truly unique and the English language employed is wonderful to read. (It will be interesting to compare it to Muhtar Holland's translation of the same work by Al-Baz Publications). This is poetic prose if you will containing hidden secrets!

The lengthy and beautiful introduction by Shaykh Tosun is a brilliant synopsis of the life and works of His Excelleny Shaykh of Shaykhs, Shaykh Abd al Qadir al Jilani (may Allah be pleased with him and with us for his sake!) and a great introduction to this greatest of Muslim Saints. It gives a glimpse of the exalted status and spirituality of this amazing human being.

A must read!

A Window to a Different World
This book is a great introduction to the mystical thought of Ash-Sheikh Aj-Jilani. Anyone who has any interest in finding the true, simple meaning of life, or seeks self purification should start with this book. Keep in mind, if you haven't read about mysticism/sufism before, you need to keep an open mind as to his wording and his actions. He does mention things in a way that the average person would deem, arrogant or self centered, but this man was beyond anything even closely related to that. This translation is better than others found, however the English, in terms of grammar and usage, can be unusual. But I find it a more closer translation in terms of Arabic usage. I hope anyone who reads this will be as enlightened as I was.

The Shy Little Kitten (A Billion Golden Memories of Little Golden Readers)
Published in Hardcover by Goldencraft (August, 1987)
Authors: Cathleen Schurr and Gustaf Tenggren
Average review score:

Pretty Kitty!
This picaresque novella will soften the hardest heart. When a mother cat leads her kittens into the barnyard sunshine, one kitten lingers behind and thus begins her adventures. She takes a walk with a mole through the countryside and the two hap upon a frog whose enormous mouth sends them into gales of laughter. A shaggy puppy then offers to lead the kitten home but not before he busies himself yapping at a squirrel who drops a nut on his nose! Home at last, the kitten joins a barnyard picnic but a bee-stung frog causes a stir and everyone dives into the brook for safety! It isn't long though before merriment is restored. 'This was the best day ever!' the little kitten exclaims. Tenggren's illustrations are lovely and most pleasing. A memorable tale and one the reader will return to time and again.

the Shy Little Kitten
The classic and amazing tale of a shy little kitten and her adventures with a puppy, a frog, and her fellow kittenly beings. Not for the faint of heart.
